FAQs

Questions, answered plainly

Including the ones with unsatisfying answers. If something here is wrong or missing, say so — the answer is more useful in the open than in an inbox.

Before you install

Is this a Dynamic Island for macOS?
That is exactly what it is. Apple shipped the Dynamic Island on iPhone and left the MacBook notch inert — Isleta puts one in the cutout your Mac already has, doing the things a Mac actually does.
Which Macs does it work on?
Any Apple silicon Mac running macOS 26 or later.
  • MacBook Pro or Air: the island lives in the notch, on the laptop’s own screen
  • Mac mini, Studio or iMac: no notched display at all, so you get a floating island pinned to the top of the primary one
  • Intel Macs are not supported and are not going to be
What about my external monitor?
Nothing appears there, by design. An external monitor has no cutout to be continuous with, so an island up there would just be a black rectangle stuck to the top of the screen. Plug in as many displays as you like — the island stays on the laptop.
Is it free? Is there an account?
Free, MIT licensed, and there is no account to make.
Is Isleta open source?
Yes, under the MIT License. The whole app is on GitHub — read it, build it, fork it, or take a piece of it for something of your own. It is also what makes the privacy page checkable rather than promised.
Does it speak my language?
English, German, French and Spanish, following whichever your Mac is set to. There is no language setting in Isleta, because a second answer to a question macOS has already asked is a second answer to get wrong. If yours is not one of the four, it draws English.
Why is it not on the Mac App Store?
The sandbox will not allow what it needs.
  • Seeing which media key you pressed requires Accessibility
  • The bundled media helper is incompatible with the sandbox
  • So it is a direct download, signed with a Developer ID, notarised by Apple, and it updates itself through Sparkle

Using it

How do I open it?
Move the pointer onto the MacBook notch and it peeks; click and it expands.
  • esc closes it, and so does a two-finger swipe up across it
  • From anywhere, ⌃⌥⌘I toggles it, and that is rebindable
The shortcut shows the wrong letter
It should not. The recorder reads your actual keyboard layout rather than assuming QWERTY, so Dvorak and AZERTY users see the key they really pressed. If what it shows is not what you pressed, that is a bug worth reporting.
Where did my activity go?
Only one item is on the island at once, and the more urgent thing wins.
  • A volume press interrupts a track. The track is still there underneath when the HUD goes — nothing is dropped, it queues
  • Activities arrive; pages are what you browse to, and they are there whether or not anything has happened lately
Does clicking it steal focus from what I am typing in?
No. The island never becomes the key window — no title bar flicker, no lost caret. The transport controls work from a window that is never focused.
How do I see my calendar and the weather?
Open the island and you are on your day already.
  • The date and the next three things on it, with what is playing beside them
  • Click the date for today and tomorrow in full; swipe once more for the weather
  • Which calendars count is up to you in Settings ▸ Glance
  • The weather works from your location or from a city you type — you do not have to grant location to have weather
How do I move between the pages?
Two fingers left or right on the open island.
  • Today, Music, Weather — wrapping, so either direction gets you anywhere in at most one turn
  • The dots under the cutout say which page you are on and how many there are
  • They fade about a second after you arrive, and come back on a turn, on opening, or as soon as the pointer is near them
  • Clicking a dot works too, and goes whichever way round is shorter
There are only two dots, and the player has gone
Nothing is playing. The player is on the carousel while there is a track and off it otherwise.
  • “What is playing” is a question with no answer on a quiet Mac, and a page that reliably said so would make the weather two flicks away for somebody who never plays anything
  • So the swipe is Today → Weather until you start something, and then the player is back between them
  • Your day keeps its music column and goes on saying Not playing there
  • It is never taken out from under you: a track ending while you are looking at the player leaves the page exactly where it is
It keeps opening on a different page
It opens where you left it, between Today and Music.
  • Those are the two people live on, so whichever you were on last is where it comes back
  • The weather is never remembered — it is a thing you go and look at and are then finished with, and a forecast fetched a quarter of an hour ago is the one page that can be stale on arrival
  • If the player is where you live and the music has stopped, it comes back to your day — and back to the player next time something is playing
Does it do anything on the lock screen?
What is playing follows you there, on a card of the same glass.
  • Artwork, the times, and previous, play-pause and next that genuinely work — no click is delivered to any app over the lock, so the card asks the window server where the pointer is rather than waiting for an event that never arrives
  • It drops in when the Mac locks and is gone the instant it is unlocked
  • The notch up there answers the pointer too: move onto it and the padlock widens, with the same trackpad tap the island gives you unlocked
  • Coming back can make a short sound, on its own switch under Settings ▸ General ▸ Lock Screen
What is the blurry ring around the open island?
A soft ring of your own desktop, and it is a hit region as much as a look. The pointer can rest in it without the island closing, and a click in it closes the island rather than falling through onto whatever is underneath. A click near the island is a click, not a miss.
What can it do with a file I drop on it?
Hold it, convert it, transcribe it, or send it.
  • Images between formats and images to PDF; video and audio; Word, RTF, HTML, spreadsheets and presentations to PDF
  • Audio and video can be transcribed — the text lands beside the original, nothing is uploaded and no permission is asked
  • Copy Link puts a shareable iCloud link on your clipboard; for anything outside iCloud Drive that row becomes AirDrop
  • An action is offered only when it applies to every file you selected
Can I make it look different?
No, and that is deliberate. The island is black in a real notch and glass where it floats, and 2.0 stopped asking.
  • A notch island has to be optically continuous with the bezel, and a floating one has nothing to be continuous with — so it was never a matter of taste
  • The style picker, the compact size, the width, height, peek and speed sliders and the shadow all went with it
  • What you can still change is what it says: every source is a switch in Settings ▸ Sources, and Settings ▸ General has the list of apps it stays out of
I work on an external monitor. Can I have any of this?
Not on that display, no — there is no cutout up there to be continuous with. The laptop’s own notch keeps working while the external display is connected, so everything on this page is a glance up and to the left.
Where is the menu bar icon, and how do I reach Settings?
In the menu bar: Show Glance, Show Now Playing, Show Weather, Open Isleta Settings, Open Setup Guide, Export Logs…, Quit Isleta.
  • Isleta has no Dock icon and no window
  • The icon can be hidden in Settings ▸ General, and that is safe because nothing lives only there
  • Right-click the island for the same menu — the way in with no icon and no shortcut to remember
  • Quit and Open Setup Guide are also in Settings ▸ About
I skipped the setup guide
Reopen it from the menu bar icon, under Open Setup Guide. It does not come back on its own — leaving at any point counts as finishing it. Eight screens: a welcome, one for each of the five permissions, launch at login, and where to find the island. Skipping one costs you exactly the feature it was for.

When something is missing

Does it show my notifications?
No. macOS already puts banners a few points to the right of the notch, and Notification Center keeps the ones you missed. Isleta is for what your Mac is doing, and it stays out of the way of what other people want from you.
The first track of a session is missing
The one-shot “what is playing right now?” read at launch goes through Automation. Live updates after that need no permission, so the island catches up at the next track change.
Can I change the volume from the island itself?
Yes — the bar in the notch is a control, not just a reading.
  • Press anywhere along it to send the level there, or hold and drag to slide it
  • The bar is only a few points tall but what you can aim at is much taller, so you do not have to be precise
  • Press the middle of the notch instead and the reading goes away, opening the island on whatever you were last looking at
Changing brightness shows nothing
Check Settings ▸ Sources first.
  • The HUDs are three switches under one master, and the brightness one can be off while volume is on
  • Isleta follows the display brightness only
  • The keyboard backlight is not shown: macOS moves that level for ambient light on its own, and the island would be announcing something you had not done
My AirPods do not appear
Grant Bluetooth in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth. That is what lets Isleta hear a device arrive. Then check Settings ▸ Sources, where the whole feature can be switched off. A device that appears with no ring beside it is reporting no battery level to macOS at all, which most non-Apple headphones do.
The weather is blank
It has nowhere to ask about. Either allow location in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, or type a city into Settings ▸ Glance — either one gives a fully working weather island, and the pane says which state it is in.
My calendar shows nothing
Grant Calendars in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Calendars.
  • Isleta asks the first time you open the island on your day
  • Full access rather than write-only, because write-only returns no calendars at all — which is the opposite of what a “what’s next” surface needs
  • If it is granted and the day is still empty, check which calendars are included in Settings ▸ Glance — no choice means all of them, so a narrowed list is the thing to look at
It is raining outside and nothing is falling in the island
Three settings switch it off on purpose, and all three are yours: Reduce Motion, Increase Contrast and Reduce Transparency. Rain has nothing to cross-fade into — its whole content is the falling — so it is drawn as nothing rather than as frozen streaks over your calendar. The weather chip still says what the sky is doing.
The island does not say which key I pressed
The word beside the level needs Accessibility. Grant it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
  • Without it the level still appears, and the bar still fills and empties; it just cannot tell a volume press from a brightness one, and the island will not lean at the ends of a range
  • This is the one macOS prompt that shows again after a refusal, so changing your mind costs nothing
The island did not lean when I hit the end of the volume
Press the key once more. Arriving at the end is not asking for anything — pressing past it is, and that is the press the island answers.
  • It keeps leaning for as long as you hold the key down
  • It needs Accessibility. The reading itself, and the bar filling and emptying, work without it
  • A muted Mac’s bar cannot be dragged either: it is drawn at nothing whatever the volume behind it is, so pressing it opens the island instead. Unmute first
I cannot see who is calling
Nor can Isleta. macOS does not let apps outside Apple read the caller, or answer for you. The island shows that a call is happening and how long it has been going, and stops there rather than guessing.
A timer I started with Siri took a while to show up
Known, and deliberate. A timer started by hand in Clock appears immediately; macOS gives no signal for one started by Siri, Shortcuts or Control Center, and Isleta will not poll for it — a source that polled would cost something every second of every day to catch a case that happens twice a week.
Apple’s volume HUD still appears
Then Accessibility has not been granted. Isleta answers the volume and brightness keys itself out of the box, so macOS never draws its own — but nothing is replaced until the permission is there.
  • Grant it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility
  • Going the other way, Settings ▸ Sources has Replace the system volume HUD and Replace the system brightness HUD under the HUD source
  • Two switches rather than one: volume is recoverable from Control Center if Isleta gets it wrong, and a screen you cannot dim is not
  • Quitting Isleta hands the keys straight back
I keep overshooting the MacBook notch with the pointer
A known rough edge. The hover target is the cutout, 185 × 32 points and easy to fly past — especially with another display arranged directly above the laptop, where the pointer travels straight through. Neither the delay nor the peek is adjustable: those sliders went in 2.0 with the rest of the Appearance pane. The keyboard shortcut is the way in that never needs aiming.

Privacy and updates

What does Isleta send anywhere?
Two kinds of request, and no account, telemetry, analytics or crash reporting service.
  • The update check, which carries nothing about you and is a switch in Settings
  • The weather, only once you have allowed location or typed a city. That request carries a place and nothing else
  • Turn the first off and never ask for the second, and Isleta does not touch the network at all

The whole policy →

Does transcription upload my audio?
No — it runs on your Mac, through the same on-device speech models the system uses, and asks for no permission of any kind. Nothing about the file leaves the machine.
How do updates work?
Through Sparkle, with a Check Now button if you would rather not wait. Every archive carries a signature the installed app verifies against a key it already holds, so someone who could rewrite the update feed still could not ship you an update.
What is in the log file?
Events, and nothing you would mind a stranger reading.
  • Never a track title, a file name, an event title or a city
  • It lives at ~/Library/Logs/Isleta, rotates at a couple of megabytes and keeps four files, so it cannot grow past about eight
  • Export Logs… bundles it up — in Settings ▸ About, in the menu bar menu, and in the menu a right-click on the island puts up
  • Safe to attach to an issue
How do I get rid of it?
Quit from the menu bar and move the app to the Trash. What is left behind is one small preferences file in your own user library and the log folder above, either of which you can delete or leave.

Still stuck?

Settings ▸ About ▸ Export Logs… writes one file with everything needed to look into it — it is also in the menu bar menu, for as long as you keep that icon. Attach the file to an issue and describe what the island did.
